BC rebates & incentives

Stack every BC solar incentive you're eligible for.

Vancouver Island homeowners can stack BC Hydro's self-generation program, solar and battery rebates, and PST exemptions on qualifying equipment. Our team handles the paperwork so you get every dollar back.

  • BC Hydro Self-Generation (formerly Net Metering)
Get credited for the solar you export back to the grid under BC Hydro's self-generation service rate (in effect since July 1, 2026). Credits roll forward through the year.
  • PST exemption on solar equipment
Solar panels are always PST-exempt in BC. Other qualifying components (inverters, racking, wiring) are exempt when purchased on the same invoice as the panels. Batteries are not exempt.
  • BC Hydro solar & battery rebates
BC Hydro offers rebates on eligible solar PV systems and paired battery storage (up to $1,500 for batteries paired with solar, and up to $5,000 for batteries enrolled in the Peak Saver program). We confirm your eligibility and apply it to your quote.

Common questions

Vancouver Island solar, explained.

Does solar actually work on Vancouver Island?+

Yes. Modern solar panels generate power in overcast, diffused and partial-shade conditions — not just full sun. Vancouver Island's long summer days more than make up for shorter winter days, and BC Hydro's self-generation program (formerly net metering) banks your summer surplus as credits you use in the winter.

What if my roof isn't south-facing?+

East, west and even some north-facing roofs still produce well on Vancouver Island — modern panels only lose 10–20% of production on east/west orientations vs. true south. Our designers model your exact roof pitch, azimuth and shading so the quote reflects your real numbers, not a generic estimate.

Do panels really work through cloudy Island winters?+

Yes. Panels generate power from daylight, not just direct sun, so overcast West Coast days still produce meaningful output. The system is sized so summer surplus (banked as BC Hydro credits) covers your winter shortfall — that's how Island homeowners hit ~100% annual offset.

What happens if I sell my house?+

Solar consistently increases resale value in BC — appraisers and REALTORS® on the Island regularly cite it as a differentiator. Our production guarantee transfers to the new owner at no cost, and financing (if used) can be either paid out at close or assumed by the buyer.

What's the catch with $0 down financing?+

There isn't one — it's a fixed-rate solar loan through Canadian lending partners. Your monthly payment is often lower than the BC Hydro bill it replaces, and the system is yours (not leased). No balloon payments, no escalators, no lien tricks. You see the full amortization before signing.

How much does a home solar system cost in Victoria or Nanaimo?+

Most Vancouver Island homes install between 6 kW and 12 kW. Costs depend on your roof, panel choice and whether you add battery backup. Your free assessment gives you a transparent, all-in quote — no ballpark guesses.

What's the payback period?+

Typical Vancouver Island payback is 8–12 years, with a 25-year production guarantee behind the system. Every quote we send includes a payback and lifetime savings model based on your actual BC Hydro usage.

What rebates and incentives are available in BC?+

BC Hydro's self-generation program (formerly net metering) credits you for the solar you export. Solar panels are PST-exempt in BC, and other qualifying components are exempt when bought on the same invoice as the panels. BC Hydro also offers rebates on eligible solar PV and paired battery storage. Note: the federal Canada Greener Homes Loan closed to new applicants in October 2025. We check every current municipal, provincial and federal program and apply eligible savings to your quote.

Do I need battery backup?+

No. Most Island homeowners start with a grid-tied solar system and add battery backup (like Tesla Powerwall) later, or when they're worried about storm outages. Your advisor will walk you through both options.

How long does installation take?+

Once permitted, most Vancouver Island residential installs take 1–2 days on-site. From signed proposal to switched-on solar is typically 6–10 weeks, depending on your municipality and BC Hydro's net-meter timeline.
